A short documentary about the life of artist Vicky Hawkins.
Hi Vicky thank you for talking to TNC, how are you holding up during these very strange times?
These have been very strange times but for me not unproductive. I self published a book of my memoirs, made a quilt, read a lot and carried on with my work. Artists are used to self isolating.
Has this time offered you any creative inspiration?
I think so I try to stay positive and see this time as an opportunity to create without pressure. I take photos of my daily life and post on Instagram, where I have made contact with other artists from all over the world. I have also taken part in the wonderful #artistsupportpledge where I have sold and bought work.
Do you have any tips or advice you would offer a fellow filmmaker?
I have! Read the essay by Jim Jarmusch, The Golden Rules of Filming. It begins with the words, "Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. It ends with a quote from Jean-Luc Godard, "It's not where you take things from, it's where you take them to." from Jim Jarmusch. I always think of the advice Alfred Hitchcock have young film makers, "Stay out of jail!"
And finally, what do you hope people will take away from your film?
Positivity! Negativity is so exhausting.
