The island of Funafuti, in the archipelago of Tuvalu, for some years now has become the stage for a unique phenomenon. Due to the unnatural warming of the sea, saltwater seeps into the subsoil bubbling up through the porous terrain provoking floods which put the future of life on this island at risk.

Hi guys, thanks for talking to TNC, how is everything going?

Very well. The film's post-production was completed a few days ago and the film is already on its way to Cannes.

That Which is to Come is Just a Promise will have its World Premiere at Quinzaine des Réalisateur, what does it mean to be bringing your film to Cannes?

We think it’s the best culmination for a project that, from its conception to its realization, has taken 9 years and involved many people all over the world.

Will there be any nerves ahead of the festival or are you just taking it all in your stride?

Everything is going well and in a quiet way. Being at Cannes is just a fundamental step towards our aim, which is to show our poetic best and to as many people as possible.

What do you hope to take away from your time at Cannes?

The possibility of creating new areas or situations in which to show our film after Cannes, as well as having met people who may be interested in our next projects.

Can you tell me a little bit about That Which is to Come is Just a Promise, how did this film come about?

The film was born in 2010 from news regarding a natural event unique in the world and with possible catastrophic effects on territory and on life in that territory.

Have you always had a passion for filmmaking?

We have always worked with moving images.

How did Flatform come about?

Flatform is a collective artist born from the meeting of two singular artists.

Has your approach as a collective changed much since your first project?

No. It is the same as that of 13 years ago.

Is there any advice you've been given that's stuck with you?

Yes, one. Although we have always disregarded it. The grandmother of one of us always told her grandchildren: do not risk, stay at your home.

Do you have any advice you would offer a fellow filmmaker?

Do what you want and where you want but out of the mainstream.

And finally, what do you hope people will take away from That Which is to Come is Just a Promise?

Many doubts and in many directions.
