An intelligent guy with a simple life starts experiencing something inexplicable.

Hi Avi, thanks for talking to tNC, how's everything going?

I am good thanks just booked my first Feature Film, TURNOVER as an actor so moving forward and am really happy.

Congratulations on having Pieces at this year's Cannes Short Film Corner, how does it feel to be part of the festival?

It is an awesome feeling that people are appreciating the creativity and getting accepted into the festival really means a lot. I also wanted to congratulate all the filmmakers who got accepted and wish them the best for the fest.

Do you have any nerves ahead of the festival?

hahaha, To be honest I am not too worried and I believe, if you believe in what you have created there is nothing to be worried about. I am very excited on the contrary.

Can you tell me a little but about Pieces?

Pieces, is a mystery about broken pieces of glass.

A little mystery in life makes life interesting. It keeps us guessing and curious. A human mind in itself is still a mystery. But sometimes one comes across something which can take over their entire mind and turn into an obsession. And obsessions can be healthy and give birth to new things or it can be fatal and result in complete ruin.

How did this film come about?

It is based on my real life experience, to a point where I almost lost myself and became obsessed with this mystery and will constantly think about it all the time. So everyday in the morning while I will walk on the street, at the same place will see these broken pieces of glass. I had no idea where they appeared everyday from. However, I told myself that this is fascinating and it makes my life interesting. The only question was the day I know where they come from. It won't be interesting to me anymore. So my imagination got Lit and I made, Pieces. I made this for people who are always in need of answers to everything and sometimes they get so obsessed that they lose their mind in search of the answers. These obsessions sometimes can end up taking people to the asylum. I hope Pieces can be the answer to their obsessions.

What was the most challenging part of bringing Pieces to life?

The most challenging part was to explain the concept to people while gathering the crew. The movie uses surrealistic elements in an indirect way. Now, Pieces is done and am really glad it's part of the SFC.

Looking back, is there anything you would do differently on this film?

I had some shots planned like vertigo shots. You know based on the budget as a filmmaker we have to work with whatever we got.

Have you always been interested in filmmaking?

I am moreover an Actor and have been interested in becoming an actor since I was 4 years old. However, after I got my Masters in Acting from the New York Film Academy. My masters thesis Loose Ends (Short Film) I had written, directed and acted in gave me so much knowledge and confidence that ever since I prefer to Direct the films which are written by me.

"It's your first film and honestly your satisfaction at the end of the day will give you the confidence of making your next one."

How much has your style and approach to this film been different than the way you approached your debut short?

My debut short has already mentioned Loose Ends. There is a massive difference in style. Loose Ends was like telling the story A, B and C. However, Pieces breaks that rule of direct storytelling but still follows a structure somewhat similarly used when touching the basis on the surrealistic approach of filmmaking. However, by that I mean Pieces, does not follow the classical design of filmmaking whereas my debut short did.

What has been the best advice you've been given?

“If you are not working for your dream every single day there is someone else out there who is doing that for the same dream you both want to live one day.”

Now you can be reflective. Do you have any advice you would offer a first time writer / director?

For a first time Writer/Director, don’t be afraid of taking risks, do what your heart says. It's your first film and honestly your satisfaction at the end of the day will give you the confidence of making your next one. Do not worry about the results, create what you feel is right.

And finally, what do you hope people will take away from this film?

I hope Pieces becomes an obsession that answers people's questions to their other obsessions. Sometimes it’s better to let go or hold on or let go or hold on or let go let go no wait hold on?!!!!!!Let go!!!!
